EAST Beijing Welcomes the New Year with the Launch of the “Lucky & Love” Art Exhibition
On December 27, EAST Beijing, in collaboration with its art project partner ucvibes and renowned China Chic artist YY, successfully hosted the opening of the ‘Lucky Love’ art exhibition. Centred around the themes of Guan Yu and the Zodiac Snake, the exhibition blends traditional Chinese culture with modern artistry. Spanning the hotel lobby and FEAST (Food by EAST) restaurant, the highlight of the show is the 9-metre-long “Lucky Snake 88” light installation in the lobby, whose playful design adds a festive cheer to the New Year celebrations.
The opening event garnered significant attention from industry insiders and media alike. Artist YY introduced his creative philosophy, delving into how Beijing’s local culture profoundly influences his work. At FEAST, guests were captivated by a 48-metre-long hand-drawn chalkboard featuring ‘Chef Guan’, a playful reinterpretation of the traditional God of Wealth. In the artwork, Chef Guan is seen surfing through desserts, rescuing hot dogs, and crafting pizzas, transforming the historically solemn figure into a lively and approachable character. YY’s bold use of colour and whimsical expressions breathe fresh life into traditional imagery, making the mural both entertaining and meaningful. During the exhibition’s preparation, YY also celebrated his birthday, reflecting, “Artists pour fragments of their lives into their work. While these pieces may eventually fade into history, new art will always emerge to carry on the legacy. That is the essence of an artist’s mission and the meaning of art.”The exhibition extends to the lobby’s ground-floor walls, showcasing reproductions of YY’s iconic prints. The unveiling of the lobby’s centrepiece, the 'Lucky Snake 88' light installation, was a highlight of the evening. Amid an eager countdown, Pieter Ham, General Manager of EAST Beijing, joined YY to lift the curtain. The Zodiac Snake, a symbol of luck in Chinese tradition, was brought to life as 88, wearing a trucker hat and playing street basketball, weaving a figure-eight pattern above the crowd. This dynamic piece bridges classical culture with modern life, spreading joy and optimism for the year ahead.
