GOING GREEN

“The best way to create a greener, more eco-friendly world is by engaging and collaborating with local communities.” Christian Kronast, General Manager EAST Beijing

Community is at the heart of EAST Beijing. Going green means not just changing the way we do things as a hotel, but working with local groups and charities on sustainable initiatives and projects that benefit the whole community.

Our team is actively promoting eco-friendly living to our guests and visitors, from switching from plastic to paper straws to holding seasonal flea markets that encourage reuse and recycling as well as running a range of green charitable activities with our local partners. We want to inspire and educate guests; while offering environmentally-conscious experiences they can feel good about.

Below you’ll find more details about the inspiring new ways we’re connecting with the community and making sure a better tomorrow starts here.

BIODEGRADABLE ECO-CUP

We launched our first biodegradable eco-cup, which is made from bamboo powder, rice husk, crop straw and other natural plant fibers. With this cup, we encouraged the community to make sustainable changes in their lives, starting with using a reusable rather than a disposable cup and offering discounts on beverages purchased when the cup is used.

IN-ROOM DRINKING WATER FILTER

Since 2020, all of our guest rooms are equipped with BRITA water filter to provide drinking water from tap, reducing 1,300 to 1,500kg of plastic water bottle waste every year.

OUR SUSTAINABLE CHRISTMAS TREES

It is our annual tradition of creating unique Christmas trees whist supporting local charities to kick off the festive season. Last year, we have used repurposed old wooden flooring from Hagaki Restaurant to build the Tree of Knowledge, with adjustable lights as part of our sustainability initiative, to reduce the amount of waste created and inspire the community with ways to reduce their own environmental footprints during the holiday.

CRAFTYUPCYCLING

Upcycling has never been so cool. Inspired by our love of Beijing’s craft beer scene, we built our own outdoor bar by repurposing a shipping container and partnering with local brewers such as Jing-A, Slow Boat and NBeer to source fresh brews from the neighbourhood.

THE JOY OFGIVING BACK

At EAST Beijing, it’s a Christmas tradition to give back to the community. Partnering with Roundabout, we collect unwanted toys, books or clothing to give to disadvantaged families. In 2019, We put festive wishes from children into 30 dinosaur eggs in the lobby, encouraging people to donate and help make their wishes come true.

DOING OUR PART SMALL AND BIG

Tim Hunt

Executive Chef & Director of Restaurants & Bar, EAST Beijing

As a chef and operator, I understand deeply how much energy a restaurant’s kitchen uses every day so reducing energy consumption as much as possible while maintaining the existing operation needs has always been my focus. For this reason, with the continued efforts of the team, FEAST and Domain have both received the Three-Leaf Green Kitchen Rating from Swire Properties.
