This month, she sits down to chat with Area Back of House Manager Michael Lee, who’s also a champion of sustainability and the magician behind EAST Hong Kong’s annual upcycled Christmas Village every year.
"Sustainability means many things to me - only use what you need, replace what you can and help ‘the cycle’ of what’s used to reproduce or not draw from another source. My top energy saving tip is to unplug items that you regularly don’t use. If there is an illuminated power switch or indicator and the device is off, it's most likely drawing a small amount of power – for example, a coffee maker or a game station. The list goes on and on, but truly in my house, if we don’t need it, we try to leave it unplugged!" Director of Strategic Sales and Revenue at EAST Miami, Brad is also an avid energy-saver.

Science meets art in EAST Miami's most eye-catching eco-feature: a sculptural Climate Ribbon canopy that soars above the outdoor spaces. Developed by Hugh Dutton Associés, the 100,000 sq. ft. facetted canopy of steel and glass undulates between our House and the office and residential towers of Brickell City Centre in downtown Miami.

Inspired by the trade winds, jalousie windows and sails, the Climate Ribbon was created through sophisticated engineering computation processes to make both art and function combined.

An artistic expression of natural forces telling the story about man and nature in symbiosis, this ultra-cool feature traps sea winds, lowers temperatures and collects rainwater for re-use, creating a pleasant microclimate that reduces the need for air conditioning.

Why tennis? Why not football?
When I was three years old, my father bought me a tennis racquet and since that moment I’ve never stop playing tennis. Tennis has always been my first sport, even if I love playing football too.

You have a tattoo that says “Where I am going, I’m going to destroy.” What a bold statement! What made you chose this?
Destroy has to be intended in a “motivational” way [laughs]. It’s a sentence that describes what I feel and what I would like to feel in the future, both in tennis and in life.

We hope you had a great trip for the Miami Open. Tell us some of your favourite places you went.
I really enjoyed my stay in Miami. Unfortunately with the tournament going on, I had just a few moments to discover the city though I really enjoyed walking the streets of Miami. It was fun to do some shopping in the centre and to have dinner in some excellent restaurants.

You must have had a good stay at EAST Miami, right? What’s your favourite spot at our hotel?
EAST Miami was definitely too good. The room was amazing, and all the staff was professional and always there to help us. My favourite spot was Sugar, for sure.

We all know how disciplined athletes can be. How do you stay motivated?
I’d simply like to have no regrets and give my best to be one of the best players in the world.
